Kiwi-Indian elected on 2020 NZMA Board as a medical student representative
Karan Banker, a fourth-year medical student at the University of Auckland, who moved to New Zealand from Ahmedabad with his family when he was six, has been elected into the role of 2020 New Zealand Medical Association (NZMA) Board Medical Student Representative.
Notably, NZMA is a “pan-professional medical organisation in New Zealand representing the collective interests of all doctors”. Banker’s tenure will be for one year, and he was one of the three candidates, for whom medical students from University of Auckland and Otago, voted online.
Earlier, Banker had completed his degree in neuroscience from Otago. Talking to this newspaper, he noted, “My main campaign issue was generating awareness among students on the harm alcoholism causes.” He also shared his desire to specialise in neurosurgery after completing his bachelors from the University of Auckland.
