Ekta takes on homelessness in Wellington

Many of you may have seen the recent Dominion Post article on the issue of homelessness in Wellington. Many agencies are helping to resolve this very complex issue.

Ekta is very pleased to have contributed in helping one of our regulars at the Guru Nanak Free Kitchen to find accommodation. He was living in the bushes (unbelievable as it may seem) and is since January 30, 2020, living in an albeit a sparely furnished apartment. We hope with help, to be able to help furnish his apartment over time.

There are many who still need accommodation/shelter and agencies helping to make this possible do need help. They need:

  • rental apartments – they are prepared to pay market rentals and commit to 5/10 year rental agreements

  • furnishing- beds/white ware/linen/kitchen items

  • TVs/laptops and used mobile phones

  • dentists and dental assistants (paid) If you would like to know more please contact us at contact-us@ekta.nz

We have been distributing food every Saturday from 5pm to 7pm, since winter 2019. Often we also get some of our regulars needing clothes/shoes etc., we also try to provide them with these.

The Wellington Night Shelter has also asked us to help with some of their needs (socks/underwear/soap/toiletries). If you would like to join us in providing these and/or the food, do contact us at the above email.

And if you like, you can also make a contribution into Ekta’s account: Account Number: 06-0229-0872755-01 Reference: Homeless

Please drop us a line with your name and we will send you the receipt for any contribution.

We also look forward to you joining us at any Saturday for the food distribution. Come and meet the people sleeping rough in our city. Please also contact us if you would like to sponsor the meals for the week.
